Flashlight Candle Replica V1 (Red)
Flashlight Candle Replica V1 (Red) Paraffin and natural wax mix, unscented 23 x 5 x 7cm // 9 x 2 x 2 3/4" 250g // 8.8oz
One hand-poured pillar candle (Approximately 35hrs burning time). Moulded and poured by hand in the UK at The Workshop of Matt Montini
The Flashlight Candle Replica is the story of a hand-poured wax object who wished to be a pillar candle and the workshop's first venture into candle making. Inspired by a German Duracell Battery advert from the 1980s of a drawing of a flashlight used as a candle holder, our Flashlight Candle Replica Series combines numerous quotidian objects and miniatures from around the workshop that, almost by magic, attach to the flashlight to create one unified (and unidentified) solid new object.
As the candle slowly (and dramatically) melts, it creates new satisfying shapes and fulfils its destiny in becoming a "real" candle. It is a vivid, messy, and temporal object, passed on to you as-if it was already in use. Montini always cited his second brother, Jakub Lewin (1912-1967), as an inspiration for the initial design. He was a janitor at a local school in Bydgoszcz, Poland and always carried a flashlight at any given time.
The Flashlight Candle Replica would be a good fit for a dinner party table or as a late night reading partner. We love that from one angle it looks like a prop from a horror film and from another - something that you might get in a Happy Meal. To borrow a slogan from another battery advertisement from the 1980s “it is ready when you need it”.
Flashlight Candle Replica V1 (Red)is moulded from a 1980s Japanese wall-mounted emergency flashlight (hence why it is the only flashlight in the series without an on/off button) fixed on a makeshift wooden plinth and combined with objects; a Bic pen, Euro coin, a miniature brick and a lighter, among others.
Instructions and safety: Trim wick to approximately 5mm before each use. To maximise the candle’s melt pool, the first time you light the candle you should burn for a constant 3 hours (this should be calculated after the initial ’top candle part’ has melted down). Do not burn for longer than 3 hours at any one time. Please note that this candle will drip some wax when burning (see disclaimer).
To prevent fire and serious injury, burn the candle within sight and never leave a burning candle unattended. Do not move a burning candle. Never burn this candle on or near anything that can catch fire. Only burn the candle on a level fire-resistant surface. Always leave at least 10cm between burning candles. Always snuff out the candle. Do not blow it out. Never use liquid to extinguish.
Disclaimer: Due to the nature of the mould and the casting process each candle is unique in detail.
Due to the candle's design and the various widths along the candle, the flame may change size and shape as you burn. The candle may melt and drip irregularly and unpredictably (especially in the lower half of the candle). We recommend you place it on a tray or protected surface (of about 30cm radius) to catch excess and melted wax and never leave it unattended. This is not a toy and when lit - is not suitable for children at any age.
